2020 aims to be a successful year for films and even more successful year for games. Both the film and gaming industry have some of the biggest releases in years planned for 2020. For films, 2019 was arguably the biggest year in the industry’s history, which gives a trivial challenge to 2020. Games, on the other hand, seem to have a bigger deck on the table for 2020 than from last year. Both industries will certainly see good years, and the planned releases only prove that point. In this article, the top 10 most anticipated movies and films will be recognized, along with some honorable mentions.

Black Widow

Black Widow is Marvel’s next planned film, starring Scarlett Johansson and David Harbour, and is releasing on April 24, 2020. Black Widow is a film that had been promised by the studio for years, and although the timing is odd, it’s finally here. Black Widow takes place shortly after Captain America: Civil War, and after a series of events, she is caught in a conspiracy that threatens her career, family, and life. She must reunite with her family and reform bonds she broke after joining the Avenger initiative. Black Widow, a Marvel film, is naturally a highly anticipated film, and the trailers have promised an action-packed adventure filled with excitement

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Final Fantasy 7 Remake releases on April 10, 2020, and is one of the highest anticipated games in recent memory. Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been in development since 2015, so a lot of time had been put into this game. This remake is also being separated into 2 parts, the second part planned for release sometime in the future. Originally released in 1997, Final Fantasy 7 is one of the best selling and loved Playstation 1 games. Final Fantasy 7 Remake plans to take the original game and completely reinvent it, using real-time combat rather than turn-based, fleshing out characters, and adding several elements to the story that was left out of the original. With fans waiting for many years and the game riding on nostalgia, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is destined to sell well.

TENET

TENET is an upcoming action flick directed by Christopher Nolan (Inception, Dark Knight) and starring John David Washington/Robert Pattinson. TENET is shrouded in absolute mystery, the only trailer of it vaguely showing the concept of the movie. TENET seems to be similar to Inception in both cinematography and concept, having a gimmick that carries the movie’s plot. TENET has a $210 million dollar budget, proving the movie aims high. Although there’s no absolute knowledge of what TENET is about, many fans of Christopher Nolan’s films are excited about his new film.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming RPG developed by CD PROJEKT RED (Witcher) and starring Keanu Reeves. The game was supposed to originally release on April 16, 2020, yet it was delayed to September 17, 2020. Cyberpunk, much like Final Fantasy, has been in development for a really long time, in fact, it has been in development since 2013. Cyberpunk promises to deliver one of the most immersive world-building choose-your-own-adventure experiences ever made, gameplay demonstrations presenting complex elements that give the player a lot of freedom of choice. While a plot synopsis has not officially released, trailers suggest it will explore the criminal underground of 2077 and the advent of robotically-enhanced humans, both legally and illegally. Trailers have shown exciting gunplay, conversations with many different options, and a large detailed world to explore. Cyberpunk marks itself as one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984 is the next entry into the DCEU and the sequel to the 2017 Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman 1984 seems to take a far more colorful and light-hearted tone than its predecessor, containing a lot of comedy and over-the-top action. The plot synopsis reveals that Wonder Woman will face off against a villainess called the Cheetah. Steve (Chris Pine) is also set to return, although it is uncertain how he does so since he seemingly died in the first film. From the trailer, Wonder Woman seems to be an exciting and fun superhero film, with great costume design and fun set-pieces.

The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II is an upcoming action game developed by Naughty Dog and releasing on May 29, 2020. The Last of Us Part II is a long-awaited sequel to the original The Last of Us released in 2013. The original is one of the most critically-acclaimed narrative action games ever released, scoring an impressive 95% on Metacritic. The Last of Us Part II will continue 5 years after the original, with a grown-up Ellie at 19 years old. The game has been in development since 2014, sharing the common theme of long development time along with other releases this year. The Last of Us II trailer promises more of what made the original so mesmerizing, with intense storytelling and gameplay. Everything shown up to this point has only elevated hype for the game with the amount of detail and refinement the game seems to have. This game will more than likely become a staple in the industry and will set a new high standard for Triple-A video games.

No Time to Die

No Time to Die is the next installment in the James Bond franchise and releases on April 10, 2020. With stars such as Daniel Craig and Rami Malek and an incredibly high budget, No Time to Die will inevitably provide a good time on screen. After a kidnapped scientist proves dangerous, Bond must return to trail him down while he discovers more and more of a mysterious villain with new technology. No Time to Die will be the twenty-fifth film in the entire franchise, yet it will be Daniel Craig’s final film as 007. No Time to Die promises to elevate the idea of a Bond movie and the trailers show that this film is not playing around.

Resident Evil 3 Remake

Resident Evil 3 Remake is a survival-horror remake of the original 1999 classic, developed by Capcom, and released on April 3, 2020. Resident Evil 2 Remake released last year and was an absolute hit both in reviews and sales. Development on Resident Evil 3 Remake was started immediately after the previous game came out, allowing for the game to come out a little over a year later before the hype dies out. Resident Evil 3 Remake follows Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira surviving a zombie apocalypse in Raccoon City, all in the while being hunted by an intelligent bioweapon named Nemesis. Resident Evil 3 Remake seems to be a 1-on-1 remake of the original and providing more of what made RE2 Remake a phenomenal re-invention of the series.

Eternals

Eternals is an upcoming Marvel flick following the comic series “Eternals”, set to release on November 6, 2020. Very little is known about Eternals, other than that it has an enormous celebrity cast (Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Angelina Jolie, and more) and that it will adapt from the Eternals comic series. Other than Black Widow, Eternals is Marvel’s big film of the year and will likely be the next step in the Marvel Universe after the Infinity Saga. Eternals is rumored to be the first film in the franchise to have an openly homosexual character. While little is known about the film, Marvel nearly always delivers on exciting and fun superhero films, so the hype for Eternals will definitely come around soon enough.

Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite is a first-person shooter developed by 343 Industries/SkyBox Labs and is planned for a holiday release in 2020. Halo Infinite will be the launch title for the upcoming Xbox Series X console and is the sixth main entry of the Halo series. Much like Eternals, not much is known about Halo Infinite quite yet. A brief teaser reveals Master Chief will return as the main protagonist and that’s about it. According to developers, Halo Infinite will be a “far more human” narrative than previous games and will steer more focus onto Master Chief’s character. Halo Infinite is the first glimpse into the next generation of video game consoles, and a large number of fans are unbelievably excited.
