Sonic the Hedgehog Review

Sonic the Hedgehog is a family movie directed by Jeff Fowler based on the hit video game franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog is the highest-grossing video game adaptation with a 70 million dollar US opening. Sonic the Hedgehog features hit stars such as James Marsden and Jim Carrey that help bring life to the film, and Ben Schwartz’s voice for Sonic is a shockingly stellar performance. Sonic the Hedgehog caters to all demographics, as it contains content that’ll please kids, adults, and long-time fans.

Sonic the Hedgehog, a creature with special powers from Mobius, escapes to Earth after his guardian, Longclaw, is killed by Echidna natives. Sonic lives many years of his life in isolation at Green Hills, Montana, observing the world around him without people noticing him. Eventually, Sonic’s loneliness gets to him, and losing control of his powers, he accidentally causes an electromagnetic explosion that cuts off the power of the entire Northwest coast. After this explosion, Sonic is hunted by the infamous Dr. Robotnik. Sonic goes to Tom (James Marsden), a cop from Green Hills that Sonic often observed, for safety and tries to escape Earth. He ultimately fails after Tom finds him and accidentally shoots him with a tranquilizer gun. After Sonic loses his rings, he and Tom must travel to San Francisco to get them back all while being chased by the diabolical and comical Dr. Robotnik.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey’s performance as Dr. Robotnik is a clever and amazing way to establish a comeback. Fans of Jim Carrey’s campiness from his previous movies will absolutely love his performance in this movie, as it reflects his over-the-top attitude he often gives his characters. Jim Carrey’s performance is easily the best aspect of the movie and carries the movie’s humor.

The humor in Sonic the Hedgehog was one of the biggest surprises of the film. While the trailers lacked a showcase of witty humor, the movie script itself is filled with it. While it isn’t absolute brilliance, it does its job to make the audience laugh in several different ways. Not only is Jim Carrey hilarious, but a lot of witty humor and slapstick is used to appeal to all audience members. It has silly kid humor, yet also deeper humor for adults.

The Horrific Past and Bright Present

When the first trailer dropped for the film, fans found Sonic’s Design to be quite a frightening sight. Several petitions were started to change the design, and with great surprise, Paramount delayed the movie to fix the design. After a lot of redesigning and money, the people’s opinion of the movie shifted completely. Many expected the movie to flop or simply be bad, yet both of these preconceptions were proven incorrect. The movie had the biggest opening for a video game movie in history and was favored by critics and fans.

While it’s far from perfect, the Sonic movie is a grand step in the right direction. Video Game movies have a large reputation of being bad, yet this movie is one of the first to take the genre out of the loop. Hopefully movies of this nature will continue to be crafted with care. Sonic will more than likely receive a sequel, and it should be great if the success of this movie is anything to go by. Sonic the Hedgehog is a fun movie for everyone and certainly worth a watch.
