 UCA Spirit Team

Our UCA Spirit Team is our cheerleaders and dancers. They meet once two to three times a week with Mrs Parrish, their head coach. The cheerleaders and dancers perform at our school’s basketball games and if restrictions allow, they may compete. Mrs Parrish says her favorite part about coaching is “seeing them have fun and enjoy what they love doing.”

I interviewed Montana Wright, who was a member of the first dance team her freshman year, but the team did not continue for her years following. But she wanted to start it back. “In the last semester of my Junior year I really wanted to start the program back, mostly because I missed dance, but I also felt it would be a great addition to our school as it was very well liked in our first year,” she said.UCA Spirit Team Seniors

Montana worked hard with the administration to get it started but it didn’t really work out due to COVID-19. Due to restricted numbers, the best thing to do was to bring the two teams together. “I am a huge advocate for school spirit and I am so honored to be a part of a brand new team this year that I hope will boost everyone’s spirits during this very uncertain time! I know for sure this team has helped me in so many ways!”

Montana wanted a school dance team because she missed dance. She’s been dancing since she was two years old to her freshman year because of extracurricular activities. “Although dance continued to be a passion of mine, by my junior year I really felt the need to dance again and restore the school spirit at UCA that I felt was lost during the years of my attendance.” She says. “When the pandemic struck at the second part of my Junior year, I felt even more drawn to the need of dance and the presence of other team members. I feel very fortunate to have an opportunity to participate under the circumstances, have wonderful team members, and celebrate our athletic programs. It has restored my passion for dance and my desire for human interaction after so many months of quarantine and stay-at-home orders.”

Montana also said that her teammates have wonderful personalities with kind hearts, and her favorite moment outside practice is when they went Christmas shopping. “One of my favorite memories is when the team went shopping for Christmas gifts for a family in need from our community. It was our first outing as a team where we really got to know each other outside of practice. Not only did we have a lot of fun together but we also participated in service for our community which we are all very passionate about. We are not just dancers or cheerleaders, we really are a team!”
