Heaven Fitch, Making History

Being the first female wrestler to win states in North Carolina, Heaven Fitch has set a high expectation for herself. From countless interviews to excruciating practices, Fitch finds balancing her social life and newfound fame a worthwhile struggle.

Heaven described her love for wrestling as “something her brothers did, so I (she) just wanted to do it too.” To Heaven, her spark for wrestling comes from pushing herself to do better, to achieve the expectations with her own sense of style. On a normal competition day, she warms up with everyone else, but the pressure is on when she is the first match, as most lightweights are to go first. In her most recent states match, Heaven got out of a pin by flipping herself over with her elbow, winning her state title, receiving notoriety from ESPN, Fox and CNN. After the match, she excitedly described the feeling as a sudden rush of adrenaline.  When off of the mats, Heaven explained that for better or for worse, wrestling inhibits her ability to have free time. Off season, Heaven enjoys playing her ukulele, practicing her art skills with painting and traditional sketches, and playing games, although still with little time to do so. After all of these winnings, what would Heaven do? She exclaimed that she was taking a long deserved break, and resting until nationals come up, building back strength to make history once again.
